Hiccup and the Alphabet bears

Having illustrated an alphabet of cats, Mark turned his attention to some of the growing collection of toy teddy bears in the grandchildren’s nursery.

With so many from which to choose, Mark ultimately found names for 26 of the bears for his Alphabet of Teddy-Bears.

When he began to write the stories he began with ‘Harry’ since Harry is the biggest of all the bears. However, the story was nothing without a foil for Harry and a small teddy bear (in fact the smallest) shouted out for attention.

‘What about me Papa?’ was the call, and has been ever since he began writing the stories of the teddy bears. This was Hiccup (small bear, big voice). Hiccup then appears in each story having adventures in each book and then,  in the case of the first book, Harry introduces Hiccup to the next bear. This will be Ivan. So the series continues, until Galileo brings Hiccup to meet Harry, with whom, of course, Hiccup is already acquainted.

The series is then a set of 26 books.

Each book also has a something beginning with the relevant alphabet letter on each page.

Alliteration is also important in most of the books, being an engaging way of children learning and repeating sounds.

Mark is now eager to see ‘Harry and Hiccup play Hide and seek’ selling in all major outlets, before being able to introduce Ivan to Hiccup’s supporters.

Other titles of a different kind, but featuring Hiccup, are in the planning stage.
