HICCUP’S ROLE

  1. Hiccup takes the Stage

I decided at an early stage that continuity would be the key to a series of books and Hiccup pretty much stole the central role.

No offence to Harry, but he was quite happy at Hobberdy Hall with no wish to become embroiled in travel to other parts of the world, nor of being involved in trickery and magic.

Hiccup had no say in the matter.

He was to be the hero/victim in each story. The bears would introduce him to the next bear in the alphabet.

Hence Harry takes him to see Ivan … hang on. I’m not giving that away yet!

What was needed now was someone who would take this germ of an idea and be happy to help bring Harry, Hiccup, Ivan and a great many teddy-bears into a printed and digital format.

Thankfully I received a very enthusiastic response from Austin Macauley who took this on board and have been happy to help at every stage.

At this early stage it is vital that you, the reader play, your part.

You are the Teddy-Bears’ audience. It is you who have to get your order in for the first book and read it with your children.

I have aimed it at an age-group of 2 – 5 years.

The books make use of a vocabulary which uses the particular letter of the alphabet – so in the ‘Harry’ book many words occur beginning with the letter ‘H’.

Also in each illustration there is an object/animal also beginning with the letter ‘H’.

I would hope so much that parents, grand-parents, aunts and uncles, elder brothers and sisters will have fun in reading this to the young ones and share in the learning of new words as the story unfolds. It can provide a springboard for teaching a new vocabulary to the young minds.

My goal is that older children may also enjoy reading it themselves.

Hopefully wanting to badger and cajole you to find out what happens when Hiccup meets the next teddy-bear!

Would you excuse me for a moment, Hiccup wants to chat to me.

‘Yes Hiccup, please be quick, I’m writing about you?’

He loves to whisper to me.

‘Yes Hiccup, that’s an excellent idea.’

‘Your shirt is very grubby and it certainly does need a wash; take it off and I’ll wash it now.

‘Thank you, now off you go …and do NOT get into trouble.

I have to handle the bears to pose them and draw them, and since Hiccup is in 26 stories you can imagine how grubby he has become. That shirt has been washed about five times already.
