THE ORIGINAL ‘HARRY AT HOBBERDY HALL’

The first title ‘Harry and Hiccup play Hide and seek’ was the first to get into print (as you well know) but it came from a book I had compiled from my initial A-Z called ‘The Alphabetabears’.

In that instance I did actually begin with ‘A’ and it was ‘Algernon Abseils down an Arch in Africa’, followed by the remaining 25 teddy-bears. At this stage Hiccup had not been conceived either in a physical or metaphysical form. It was simple; all 26 letters with 26 teddy-bears in scenes with objects beginning with the relevant alphabetical letter.

(Attached is the illustration of the original Harry outside Hobberdy Hall). The accompanying text was:

Harry is standing outside his Home, Hobberdy Hall. He is Holding his own Hobby Horse. The weather is Hot and exotic flowers, such as Honeysuckle and Hibiscus are flowering outside his Hothouse. Harry likes Humbugs, as you can see, perhaps the Hedgehog is Hurrying to eat some too. That Harris Hawk is perched on the Hamper of Healthy food waiting to Help Himself.

Even a Heron is flying over the Hall.

As mentioned previously the book appeared to fall between two stools (Just as Hiccup did in his misadventures with Lulworth Bear), neither a ‘coffee-table’ book, nor a children’s story. I therefore decided not to pursue it currently buy maybe one day ……….!

Nearly all the names of the teddy-bears remained from that book and carried over into the current series.

That is yet another story yet to write.
